The Best Biscuits in Marietta, Vinings, and Smyrna

This might be a quick way to start a fight, but I personally think the best biscuits in the Atlanta area are here in the suburbs. Everyone has a different favorite, whether you enjoy your biscuit drizzled in butter or jam or eaten as a sandwich. They’re the quintessential Southern menu item, tracing their origins back to when farm workers needed a hearty meal before a day in the fields. Many of us have strong memories of our own family recipes, of cutting them into circles using a Mason jar or biscuit cutter. So all of these places have been independently verified as having excellent biscuits! What’s your pick for best biscuit in Marietta, Vinings, or Smyrna?

1911 Biscuits & Burgers, Smyrna

1911 Biscuits & Burgers is one of Smyrna’s favorite low-key breakfast and lunch spots, known for oversized handmade biscuits, classic Southern comfort food, and surprisingly strong burgers. It looks like a former Waffle House and even has a drive-thru. Their buttermilk biscuits are described as soft, buttery, flaky, and softball-sized, with favorites including the fried chicken biscuit, sausage gravy biscuit, and the “Southern Comfort,” an open-faced biscuit topped with fried chicken, eggs, and gravy.

Biscuits and More, East Cobb

Biscuits & More is somewhere I grew up going to in suburban Marietta. In high school, we’d go before school, and on Sundays, I’d get a sausage biscuit for breakfast and later have lunch with my family, where we’d have perfectly griddled smash burgers. The sides, including the cheese grits, are incredibly rich. The family-run operation is also a big supporter of the local schools and sports teams, employing several young people.

The Marietta Local, Marietta Square

The biscuits at The Marietta Local are one of the restaurant’s signature items, leaning more toward a rich, buttery, housemade Southern biscuit than the huge fluffy “cathead” style you find at some old-school diners. You can enjoy it as a chicken biscuit, filled with cheese and egg, or topped with sausage gravy, without worrying that it will fall apart. It can get crowded and difficult to find a table, so go early.

Minit Saver, West Marietta

I found this spot in my ongoing quest for gas station food, and it didn’t disappoint. Hidden inside a convenience store on Due West Road, the kitchen turns out old-school Southern biscuits you can grab from the counter. Options include sandwiches filled with sausage, bacon, or egg inside the pillowy biscuit. There are a few booths where you can sit, or you can do what I did and eat it in the car.

Red Eyed Mule, Marietta Square

The Red Eyed Mule is one of the most beloved breakfast-and-lunch institutions in Marietta, upgrading to a larger location since it opened in 2010 in a tiny space. Locals, including noted food expert Alton Brown, love the biscuits and the burgers served on Texas toast. Biscuits can be served on their own, as sandwiches, but they also come on the side of many of the breakfast plates.

Season, Marietta Square

Instead of sticking to traditional sausage-and-gravy diner fare, Season treats biscuits almost like a fine-dining Southern sandwich format, pairing scratch-made biscuits with ingredients like duck confit, pork belly, country-fried sirloin, and Gruyère cheese. But be sure to make a reservation as seating is limited, and it’s very popular!

Muss & Turner’s, Vinings

The most talked-about biscuit is the chicken biscuit that appears on the weekend brunch menu at Muss & Turner’s, offered on Saturdays and Sundays. You can also enjoy house-made sandwiches with Southern sides, all made fresh daily. And if you can find it, the restaurant also has a speakeasy. If you can’t get in here, neighboring South City Kitchen is a close second in terms of great biscuits.
